You made a set of Alight Motion presets: a few .xml files, a CC pack, maybe a shake pack. The usual move is to upload them to Google Drive, set the link to public and paste it in your YouTube description.
That works. But it causes three problems. The Drive link gets copied into Telegram groups and preset-dump sites within days. Google Drive won't tell you how many people downloaded the pack. And viewers can grab the link from the description without watching the video.
Here's how to keep your files in Drive and put a password in front of them, step by step. It takes about five minutes.
What you need
- Your preset files (.xml, project files, CC packs) in Google Drive
- A free Passdropit account
- A password you can say out loud in your video
Step 1: Put the pack in one file
If you're sharing several XML presets, zip them into one file, like shake-pack-v2.zip. One file means one link, one password and one download count. Most Android file managers, including Files by Google, can extract a zip.
Upload the file to Google Drive. If you already have the pack in Drive from an older video, you can use that file. You don't need to re-upload anything.
Step 2: Set Drive sharing to "Anyone with the link"
Passdropit sends people to your Drive file after they enter the password. So the file itself has to be viewable without a Google sign-in.
- In Google Drive, open the file's menu and choose Share.
- Under General access, change Restricted to Anyone with the link.
- Leave the role as Viewer. Viewers can still download the file.
- Click Done.
If you leave it on Restricted, your fans will hit a "request access" page instead of the download. Passdropit checks that the file is public when you add it, so you'll catch this before you publish.
Step 3: Create the Passdropit link
- Sign in to Passdropit and click Create New Link.
- Choose Google Drive and pick your preset file from your Drive.
- Choose a custom slug that matches the pack, like
passdropit.com/shake-pack-v2. Short slugs are easier to type from a phone.
Step 4: Set a password you can say clearly
Your viewers will hear the password, then type it on a phone. Make that easy:
- Use one lowercase word, like
velocityorneonshake. - Avoid characters that look or sound alike, such as l, I and 1, or O and 0.
- Avoid spaces and symbols. Some viewers will get them wrong.
- Use a new password for each pack. If an old one leaks, your new pack stays safe.
Step 5 (optional): Add an expiry or download limit
On Pro you can make the link stop working after a date or after a number of downloads. That's useful for limited drops: "this pack is free for 7 days" or "first 500 downloads". Free links don't expire, which is fine for evergreen packs.
Step 6: Put the link in the description and the password in the video
Replace the Drive link in your description with the Passdropit link. Then tell people where the password is:
Preset pack: passdropit.com/shake-pack-v2 (password is in the video)
In the video, say the password and show it on screen at the same moment. A good spot is right after you show what the presets look like, when the viewer has decided they want them. Showing it on screen matters: many viewers watch without sound.
When a viewer opens your link, they see a password screen. After the right password, they go straight to your Drive file and download it. They then import the preset into Alight Motion as usual. Menu names vary between app versions, so it helps to show the import on screen once in the video.
What about alight.link and QR codes?
Passdropit works with Google Drive, Dropbox and Notion links. It doesn't sit in front of alight.link project links. If you share both, the XML file in Drive is the part you can protect and track.
QR codes still work. Make the QR code point at your Passdropit link instead of the Drive link, and viewers who scan it will see the same password screen.
What you see after you publish
Your Passdropit dashboard counts every use of the link, day by day. That's the number Drive never gives you: how many people actually took the pack.
On Pro you also see the country and city for each access. Alight Motion audiences are often spread across India, Indonesia and the Philippines, so it's worth knowing where your downloads come from before you plan captions or upload times. We go deeper on this in how to track who downloads your presets. The steps are the same for XML packs.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the old Drive link up. If the raw Drive link is still in a pinned comment or an older video, people will use that instead. Swap it everywhere.
- Putting the password in the description. Then anyone can copy both. Keep the password in the video.
- Hiding the password in the last second. Viewers get annoyed and ask in the comments, and someone answers. Put it where a real viewer will see it.
- Drive set to Restricted. Fans get a request-access page. Re-check Step 2.
What a password can and can't do
A password stops people who find your link on a preset-dump site or in a group. They don't have the password, so they don't get the file. That's most of the resharing.
It won't stop a fan who unlocks the pack and then sends the file itself to a friend. If a pack leaks with its password, change the password or set an expiry. You can edit both on an existing link. See how to prevent your link from being shared beyond your audience for more ways to keep a link contained.
What it costs
Password protection, custom slugs and basic download counts are free. Location data, email alerts and expiring links are part of Pro at $5/month. Your presets stay in Google Drive either way.
